In alopecia areata, the immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles and causes hair loss. Doctors don’t know why the immune system attacks hair follicles, but they believe both genes and environmental factors play a role.

The most common options include: Minoxidil (Rogaine). Over-the-counter minoxidil comes in liquid, foam, and shampoo forms. For most effectiveness, apply the product to the skin of the scalp once a day for women and twice a day for men.
